Wrinkle Treatment With Botox – What is it?
What is Botox?
Botox ® is a very specific medicine made by a company called Allergan that has been used to treat wrinkles for around 30 years. It contains Botulinum Toxin A which is a protein made by a bacteria found in nature that stops muscles contracting to various degrees. Allergan has tuned this in to an injectable product that when used correctly will temporarily stop or reduce muscle contraction in a specific area thus reducing wrinkles. Other companies make similar products but the name Botox refers specifically to the Allergan product which is the most commonly used toxin worldwide.
How does it work?
To make a muscle move your brain sends a small electrical signal to it. When the signal reached the muscle, it contracts, Botox works by stopping this signal from making the muscle that it reaches contract. When it comes to lines around the eyes, or frowns, without muscle contraction there is no force to pull the skin into a wrinkle so the skin appears smoother. Some patients choose to have Botox treatment before larger wrinkles form to preserve a smooth and youthful appearance to the skin.
What can it be used for?
Botox can be used to treat many different areas to reduce the depth and severity of wrinkles. The 4 most common areas treated are
- lines running across your forehead
- crows feet around the eyes when you smile or squint
- the glabella which is the area between the eyebrows that wrinkles when scowl
- bunny lines next to the nose
Ho long do results take to appear
Results usually appear over 4-7 days after treatment and will last 3-5 months. A review around 7 days after treatment is usually part of the process
